History: from 1917 to the 2022 reopening

The first municipal casino in Campione opened in 1917. In May 2007 it moved into its present building, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, with more than 55,000 square metres over nine floors plus three underground parking levels. That size is why it is often described as the largest casino in Europe.

On 27 July 2018 the casino was declared bankrupt and closed, a heavy blow for a town whose economy depends on it. It reopened on 26 January 2022. The Municipality of Campione d’Italia owns it through a wholly public company, and the casino remains the main driver of the local economy, though the town and the casino company are still dealing with debts and legal claims from the years before the closure.

Visiting the casino

The casino opens every day except 24 December, from noon until 4am, or 4:30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Slots open at noon and table games start in the afternoon. You must be 18 or older and show a valid ID at the door; Italy’s national rules are covered in our gambling laws in Italy guide.

The dress code depends on the floor. The slot floors are informal. On the third floor, where the French and American table games are, shorts, tank tops and flip-flops are not allowed, and smart dress is recommended for VIP areas, special events and the restaurant.

Table games and poker

The table games include French and American roulette, punto banco (baccarat), blackjack, craps and the French game Trente et Quarante. Poker players will find Texas Hold’em, Ultimate Texas Hold’em and Russian Poker.

Poker is a big part of Campione’s appeal. In September 2024 the casino signed a four-year deal with Sisal, part of Flutter, and PokerStars for a permanent poker room and regular live tournaments. The PokerStars Open in March 2025 drew a record 2,423 Main Event entries, re-entries included, for a prize pool of EUR 2,326,080.

Slots

More than 500 slot machines fill the first and second floors. Alongside video slots you will find video poker, multi-game machines, electronic roulette and progressive jackpots such as the Mystery Jackpot.

Getting there

Campione d’Italia is part of Italy but is surrounded by Swiss territory, so most visitors arrive through Switzerland. By car, take the A9 Milan to Como to Lugano motorway; Milan is a little over an hour away and Lugano about ten minutes. By train, go to Lugano and take a taxi, about 15 minutes. Direct buses run from Milan, and ferries link Campione with nearby lakeside towns.

Hotels and dining

The casino has a restaurant with lake views and bars. Places to stay nearby include Hotel Campione and Grand Hotel Campione in town and The View Lugano a short drive away. For other casinos in the area, see our Switzerland casinos guide.
