Boyd Gaming history

Boyd Gaming was started by Sam Boyd and his son Bill Boyd. The company dates its operations to 1975, when the California Hotel and Casino opened in downtown Las Vegas. Boyd built its business on Las Vegas locals casinos off the Strip and on downtown hotels, then grew into regional markets through acquisitions.

The company is also known for its ties to Hawaii, which has no casinos. Boyd owns a travel agency in Hawaii, and Hawaiian visitors filled about 75% of occupied room nights at the California in 2025, along with large shares at the Fremont and Main Street Station.

In July 2025 Boyd sold the 5% stake in FanDuel it had held since 2018 for about $1.76 billion.

Gambling at Boyd casinos

Boyd’s downtown and locals casinos are among the places Las Vegas players look for better odds than the Strip:

  • Blackjack. The California deals double-deck blackjack that pays 3-2 with doubling after a split, and the Fremont also deals 3-2 double deck. Both also run six-deck games that pay only 6-5, so pick the double-deck table. A 3-2 game is far better than the 6-5 blackjack common on the Strip. See our guide to the best blackjack in Las Vegas.
  • Video poker. Sam’s Town carries nickel Triple Deuces Wild at 99.92% with perfect play, and the California has Deuces Wild 44 at 99.73%. Our best video poker in Las Vegas guide has more.
  • Craps and table games. Rules and odds on craps and other table games vary by property and by day, so check the table sign before you buy in.

Table limits and pay tables change often, so confirm the rules on the table or machine before you play.
