MotorCity Casino Hotel Detroit is a casino hotel on Grand River Avenue, northwest of downtown Detroit. Its strongest draw is combining gambling, a Sound Board show, and a hotel stay without moving between properties. Free parking and complimentary event shuttles also make it worth considering for a Detroit sports trip. I’d shortlist it for adults arriving by car, but not for travelers who want a swimming pool or a hotel in the middle of downtown’s main sightseeing district.

Location: best for a casino overnight or Detroit event
MotorCity makes the most sense when the property itself is a substantial part of your evening. Dinner, casino time, a performance, and a room upstairs are a useful combination, particularly when members of your group want to call it a night at different times.
Near downtown is not the same as being surrounded by downtown restaurants, stadiums, and riverfront attractions. I’d treat MotorCity as a base, then plan transportation to the places you want to see.
- Sound Board show: Staying here eliminates the trip to another hotel after the performance.
- Stadium or arena event: Free parking and event shuttles can simplify the outing, provided the arrangements work for your event.
- Sightseeing weekend: Compare the total room price and transportation needs with a hotel closer to your planned stops.
- Pool-centered getaway: Choose another hotel. Spa whirlpools are not a substitute for a swimming pool.

Casino games: slots, video poker, and tables
MotorCity offers slots, video poker, and live table games, giving a mixed group more flexibility than a machines-only casino. Finding your preferred game and finding your preferred betting limit, however, are separate questions.
Slots and video poker
My first piece of slot advice here is the same as anywhere else: look at the total wager, not just the denomination. A penny game can still require a substantial bet once the selected credits and features are included.
For video poker, inspect the pay table before putting in money. Machines with the same game name do not necessarily offer the same payouts. Pick a wager that fits your budget rather than stretching it to chase a progressive.
There is no sensible reason to label MotorCity’s machines loose or tight based on somebody’s good or bad evening. Individual gambling results do not establish long-term returns.
Table games
Blackjack, craps, and roulette are part of the table-game mix. Read the posted limits before buying in, and check the rules at the specific blackjack table you intend to play. The next table over may not offer the same conditions.
I would not build a trip around an assumed bargain minimum. Limits and open tables can change with staffing and demand. If a specialty game is the reason for your visit, contact the casino before traveling.
Poker room and sportsbook
MotorCity has no dedicated player-versus-player poker room or on-property retail sportsbook. Video poker, poker-themed table games, and online betting products are different offerings.
Hotel rooms and amenities
MotorCity’s official room information lists 400 rooms, including 33 suites. Published features include a marble bathroom with a separate soaking tub and shower, a coffee maker, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel FAQ also lists a small refrigerator in every room.
Those comforts help, but the biggest advantage is simpler: your room is in the same property as the evening’s entertainment. That convenience can matter more than another item on an amenities list.
Room comfort is not guaranteed by that list. In a Trip.com review posted January 24, 2026, one guest described an easy check-in and a generally clean room but reported that an unadjustable thermostat left it too hot. That is an individual experience, not a finding about every room. Temperature-sensitive sleepers should raise any cooling problem with the front desk promptly.
Check-in is after 4 p.m., and checkout is before 11 a.m. For an afternoon event, do not assume your room will be ready early. Ask about luggage arrangements and event transportation before setting your schedule.
D.Tour Spa and fitness center, but no pool
D.Tour Spa has thermal whirlpools, steam rooms, dry saunas, and rain showers. The hotel also has a fitness center, but children cannot use either facility.
D.Tour’s access policy limits amenity use to hotel guests, guests receiving a service, and Club Metro members with Signature, Elite, or Premium status. Walk-in visitors without one of those qualifications cannot use the amenities, so do not assume you can simply drop in for the whirlpools.
MotorCity has no swimming pool. I would choose it for a casino-and-show overnight, not a conventional family resort stay. Children are allowed in the hotel and restaurants, but anyone younger than 21 must remain accompanied by an adult.
Hotel costs: deposits, extra beds, and packages
The hotel’s published policies contain several booking details worth knowing. The front desk accepts credit cards, not cash, and requires a $50 incidental deposit at check-in. That authorization is not a resort fee or an automatic permanent charge. The hotel says it releases incidental authorizations at checkout, with the release usually taking three to five business days to appear in the account.
A rollaway costs $40 per night, subject to availability. Only one is permitted in a king room, and none are permitted in rooms with two double beds. That restriction matters more than the fee if you are trying to accommodate an extra person in the wrong room category.
What an extra bed adds to your budget
- Two nights with one rollaway: An illustrative stay in an eligible king room adds $80 before applicable taxes. Compare that surcharge with a room configuration that already accommodates your group.
- One night with a rollaway and incidental hold: The $40 charge plus the $50 authorization requires $90 in additional credit-card capacity, excluding the room bill and applicable taxes. Only the rollaway portion is a stated fee; the incidental authorization is a hold.
Both examples assume an available rollaway in an eligible room.
Package credits are not cash discounts
The official hotel page advertises a Stay & Play package with $40 in Reward Play and a Shop and Stay package with $40 in gift-shop credit. These benefits serve different purposes. Neither should automatically be counted as a $40 cash reduction in the room price.
I’d compare the package total with the otherwise available room rate, then ask whether I would actually use the benefit. A shopping credit has little practical value if you were not planning to buy anything.
Guests booking a corporate negotiated rate have another distinction to consider: published benefits include a 10% Lacquer gift-shop discount. On an illustrative eligible $100 purchase before tax, that is a $10 discount. It is not advertised as a benefit of every hotel reservation.
The general cancellation deadline is 6 p.m. the day before arrival, but some prepaid reservations cannot be canceled without a charge. Read the terms of your selected rate.
Restaurants, bars, and Sound Board
Revel Steak and the food court provide a choice between a planned dinner and a quicker meal. For a special occasion, check Revel’s current menu, reservations, and hours before organizing the evening around it.
I prefer leaving a comfortable gap between dinner and a show. Being in the same building does not make a wait for a table disappear. Check closing times, too, rather than assuming the full dining lineup will be available after the performance.
Sound Board is a meaningful reason to consider MotorCity even when gambling is secondary. Check the seating plan and entry requirements for your performance. Lounge options such as Radio Bar add another possibility, but let the actual entertainment calendar drive your plans.
For families, hotel access and concert admission are separate questions. Sound Board’s November 2025 venue rider states that show guests must be at least 21. Keep that restriction in mind before buying tickets for a mixed-age group.
Parking, event shuttles, and arrival logistics
Free self-parking and valet are practical strengths for visitors driving into Detroit. Standard valet uses the Temple Street entrance and accepts arrivals from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; departures are handled around the clock. VIP valet has a separate Brooklyn Street entrance and operates 24 hours.
Retrieving a car after 11 p.m. is not the same as arriving with one after 11 p.m. For a late arrival, plan for self-parking or ask about your options.
Complimentary event shuttles are advertised for Little Caesars Arena, Comerica Park, and Ford Field. Wristbands are required and can be collected at the front desk during check-in. Confirm the schedule, pickup location, eligibility, and return arrangements for your event before relying on the service.
Rideshare and taxi areas are outside the main valet. Arrange airport transportation separately rather than assuming the event shuttle also serves Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
Smoking and other practical policies
- Smoking: The hotel is nonsmoking, but the casino has a first-floor Smoking Slots section near Headlights Lounge, plus designated outdoor smoking areas. A nonsmoking hotel does not mean an entirely smoke-free property.
- Identification: You must be 21 or older to gamble. Bring valid government-issued photo identification.
- Animals: Only service animals are permitted in hotel rooms.
- Outside food: The hotel permits one small cooler no larger than 16 quarts, with restrictions on larger food containers, liquor, and other items. Check the policy before packing supplies for a group.
- Accessibility: Discuss specific room features, parking needs, and theater seating directly with the property before booking.
Club Metro rewards
Club Metro is MotorCity’s rewards program. Ask how your planned play earns benefits and whether an offer has booking restrictions or expiration dates. Use the card for gambling you already intended to do, not as a reason to increase your budget.
A complimentary room stops being a bargain when you gamble more than you can comfortably afford trying to earn it.
Our recommendation
I’d consider MotorCity for adults driving into Detroit for casino time, a Sound Board show, or a sporting event supported by the hotel’s shuttle service. Free parking, on-site dining, and rooms with separate soaking tubs strengthen the overnight proposition. Choose another hotel if swimming or walking straight into downtown’s main visitor districts is central to your trip, and account for the designated casino smoking area and the 11 p.m. cutoff for standard valet arrivals.
