The Mirage Las Vegas closed on July 17, 2024, and is no longer available for a hotel stay or casino visit. The former tropical-themed resort at 3400 Las Vegas Boulevard South is being transformed into Hard Rock Las Vegas. Its central Strip location and place in casino history make the redevelopment worth following, but its rooms, games, restaurants, and volcano are not current attractions. This guide is for travelers checking an old recommendation or following the replacement resort, not choosing somewhere to stay tonight.

What happened to The Mirage?
The Mirage opened in 1989 and helped establish the modern Las Vegas megaresort: a hotel and casino that was an attraction itself, rather than simply somewhere to gamble and sleep. Steve Wynn’s tropical-themed resort and erupting volcano became recognizable even to people who never put a dollar in a slot machine.
Hard Rock took over the Mirage’s operating business in December 2022. The resort retained its name during the transition, then closed for a larger transformation. Hard Rock’s May 15, 2024, closure announcement set July 17, 2024, as the cessation date and described plans for a guitar-shaped hotel tower.
I would treat this as a future resort, not the old Mirage with some construction downstairs. That distinction matters when choosing a hotel, arranging dinner, or deciding where to gamble.
When is Hard Rock Las Vegas expected to open?
Hard Rock’s Las Vegas meeting directory advertises a 2027 debut. The December 2024 tourism construction bulletin listed spring 2027. These are projected schedules, not a confirmed opening day. An opening target and a confirmed room reservation are two different things.
For group trips, there is a separate timing detail: Hard Rock’s meetings and conventions page says it is welcoming group events starting in 2028 and beyond. That is an event-booking timeframe, not confirmation of the resort’s opening day. Organizers should discuss their dates directly with the sales team.
Casino games, poker room, and sportsbook
The Mirage no longer has an operating casino floor. Its former slots, video poker machines, live table games, and betting facilities are unavailable to visitors.
Historically, its game selection included slots, video poker, blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat, and other table games. That explains the former casino’s appeal, but it does not establish the replacement Hard Rock’s inventory, rules, denominations, or table minimums.
Slots and video poker
Do not visit the site looking for a favorite Mirage machine. An old slot list is not a current inventory, and a former video poker recommendation tells you nothing about the future floor.
At an alternative casino, my advice is to compare the actual wager and rules, not just the denomination. A penny slot can require a much larger total bet, while a video poker game’s pay table matters more than its familiar name.
Table games
There are no active Mirage table games. Historical claims about cheap blackjack or craps minimums are not useful for planning a visit now.
Elsewhere, check both the posted minimum and the rules before sitting down. In blackjack, the payout for a natural matters alongside the minimum wager. The table that looks cheaper is not automatically the better deal.
Poker room and sportsbook
The closed Mirage has no poker room or on-property sportsbook available to visitors. Its poker history and former betting facilities are not current offerings. Video poker, poker-themed table games, sports televisions, and mobile betting apps should not be confused with these facilities.
Hotel closure and planned room expansion
You cannot book a Mirage hotel room. Its former rooms, suites, villas, and guest amenities are closed.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s December 12, 2024, construction bulletin recorded 3,044 former Mirage rooms and 3,640 planned Hard Rock rooms. Those figures describe former inventory and a redevelopment plan, not accommodations currently available to reserve.
Our comparison of those published inventories puts the planned successor at 596 more rooms, or approximately 119.6% of the former Mirage inventory. This planning-based estimate illustrates the expansion’s scale. It does not establish future room prices, service quality, or availability.
Gamboool original analysis
We assembled the comparison below from published information and our calculations. These are selected examples, rather than measured gambling sessions or a representative survey.
| Detail | Published information |
|---|---|
| Mirage room reservations and show tickets: Historical automatic cancellation and refund policy | The closure announcement specified automatic cancellation and refunds for room reservations or show tickets beyond July 14, 2024. This reservation cutoff was earlier than the announced cessation date. |
| Mirage third-party reservations: Historical refund and rebooking contact policy | Third-party bookings were also subject to automatic cancellation, but travelers were directed to their booking provider for rebooking availability or possible refunds. |
| Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip: Operating-status distinction in the closure announcement | The announcement explicitly distinguished the Strip’s Hard Rock Cafe from the closing Mirage resort. This is a historical statement, not a fresh verification of cafe operations. |
| Mirage loyalty benefits during the Hard Rock transition: Historical Unity participation | The May 2024 announcement described Mirage participation in Unity, including earning and using points across participating Hard Rock venues. It does not establish post-closure redemption rights or an MGM account transfer. |
| Former Mirage hotel inventory: Published closure classification and room count | The LVCVA’s December 12, 2024, bulletin classified the Mirage as closed for renovation and rebranding and recorded 3,044 rooms removed from operating inventory. |
| Hard Rock Las Vegas redevelopment: Published planned hotel inventory and opening target | The December 12, 2024, LVCVA bulletin listed 3,640 planned rooms and a spring 2027 opening target for the former Mirage site. Both describe a plan, not bookable inventory or a guaranteed opening date. |
| Hard Rock Las Vegas: Operator brochure opening target | Hard Rock’s meeting brochure also describes a 2027 debut, without providing an exact opening day or public room-booking terms. |
| Hard Rock Las Vegas event facilities: Published capacity limitations | Published event capacities are conditional: equipment and layout affect attendance limits, banquet figures assume specified table seating, and convention space is described as ground-level. |
| Hard Rock Las Vegas planned meeting facilities: Operator-published meeting-space description | The operator markets nearly 200,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. This specifically described meeting-space figure should not be treated as interchangeable with the LVCVA bulletin’s convention-space figure. |
| Calculation | Result | Takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Planned Hard Rock room inventory compared with the former Mirage | 596 hotel rooms | The published redevelopment plan calls for more rooms than the former Mirage, but planned inventory is not evidence that rooms are available to book. |
| Planned successor room inventory as a percentage of the former Mirage inventory | 119.579500657 percent of former hotel room inventory | This comparison puts the planned hotel expansion in context; it does not establish future room prices, availability, or service quality. |

Method: Published inputs collected 2026-10-13. Illustrative assumptions are labeled, and the full calculation inputs remain in the saved research record. These examples support planning; they do not predict a particular session.
I would not use the larger room count alone as a reason to prefer the future Hard Rock. A bigger hotel can broaden the resort experience, but room condition, dining access, elevators, service, and total cost will matter more to someone staying there.
There is no current Mirage nightly rate, resort fee, check-in time, or guest parking package to budget for. If a booking page appears to offer a Mirage stay, check the property name, address, and terms before paying.
Restaurants, entertainment, and the volcano

The Mirage’s former dining lineup included Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak, Otoro, Osteria Costa, The Still, and Rhumbar. Those names belong to its operating years, not a current dining itinerary at the redevelopment site.
The same applies to its pool, spa, salon, and entertainment venues. The resort was associated with Siegfried & Roy, comedy performances, and Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles LOVE, but these are not current Mirage attractions.
There is no operating Mirage volcano show. Do not build an evening walk around an old eruption schedule.
For a replacement dinner plan, I would choose a restaurant near the theater or casino you intend to visit. Strip distances have a talent for looking modest on a map and considerably less modest on your feet.
The Hard Rock Cafe is a different destination
Hard Rock’s 2024 closure announcement explicitly said the Strip’s Hard Rock Cafe remained open. That was a separate venue, not evidence that The Mirage stayed open.
The Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas location page places it in Showcase Mall, next to MGM Grand and across from Park MGM and T-Mobile Arena. Check the cafe’s current information, and do not use the former Mirage address for a reservation or rideshare drop-off.
Location, parking, and practical trip planning
The former Mirage site is on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard, between the Caesars Palace area and Treasure Island, with The Venetian across the boulevard. That position helps orient visitors following the redevelopment, but it is not a functioning Mirage hotel destination.
- Driving: Follow parking instructions for the operating property you intend to visit. Do not assume the former Mirage garage or valet entrance is available.
- Walking: Follow posted pedestrian routes around construction rather than an old resort map.
- Taxis, rideshares, and airport transfers: Use your actual destination, not The Mirage out of habit.
- Accessibility: Confirm accessible parking, drop-off arrangements, and room requirements with your chosen hotel.
Nearby alternatives include Treasure Island, The Venetian and Palazzo, and Caesars Palace. I would shortlist by location, then compare the complete stay cost: room charges, mandatory fees, taxes, parking, and transportation. Saving on a room does little good if you spend the difference getting back to the part of the Strip where you wanted to be.

Old reservations, rewards accounts, and offers
The closure announcement specified automatic cancellations and refunds for room reservations and show tickets beyond July 14, 2024, earlier than the July 17 closure date. Travelers with third-party reservations were directed to their booking provider for rebooking availability or possible refunds.
Those were historical closure arrangements, not a current booking policy. Anyone resolving an old reservation issue should contact the company that handled the booking and keep the original confirmation handy.
The Mirage operated under MGM before Hard Rock’s takeover, and the May 2024 announcement described participation in Hard Rock’s Unity rewards program. Neither establishes what an old balance or offer is worth today. Contact the issuing program rather than assuming benefits transferred between operators or will be honored by the future resort.
Who this property information is best for
The Mirage belongs on a Las Vegas history itinerary, not on your shortlist for a hotel stay or gambling stop: the resort closed in July 2024 for its transformation into Hard Rock Las Vegas. Its center-Strip site remains relevant to travelers following the redevelopment, but the planned replacement is a future destination rather than a bookable Mirage experience. Choose an operating Strip resort if your trip depends on casino play, dining, entertainment, or an overnight stay.
Frequently asked questions
Is The Mirage Las Vegas still open?
No. The Mirage closed on July 17, 2024. Its casino, hotel, restaurants, and resort amenities are no longer operating as The Mirage.
What is replacing The Mirage?
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas is being developed on the site. Plans include a guitar-shaped hotel tower and a different resort identity.
When will Hard Rock Las Vegas open?
Published plans advertise a 2027 debut; the December 2024 tourism bulletin specified spring 2027. These are projections, not a confirmed opening day. Rely on official opening and reservation announcements before committing to a stay.
Can you still see the Mirage volcano show?
No. There is no operating Mirage volcano show or current eruption schedule.
Does The Mirage have a poker room or sportsbook?
No. The closed property has no operating poker room or sportsbook.
Is this the old off-Strip Hard Rock Hotel?
No. The former Hard Rock Hotel on Paradise Road became Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. This redevelopment occupies the Mirage site on Las Vegas Boulevard.
What is the minimum gambling age?
Nevada casino gambling is for adults 21 and older. The Mirage is closed, so that requirement does not mean gaming is available at this site.
Sources and redevelopment context
The sources linked above distinguish the Mirage’s closure arrangements and former inventory from the planned Hard Rock resort. Opening targets, event-booking timeframes, and planned facilities should not be read as confirmed booking availability or completed amenities.
Poker room and sportsbook
There is no dedicated poker room or on-site sportsbook.
