Sports Betting

Learn how sports betting works: football lines, parlays and teasers, auto racing bets, and where sports betting is legal in the United States today.

This section explains how sports betting works, from reading a line to building parlays and teasers, with guides to specific sports. It is written for bettors who want to understand what they are betting on and what each bet type costs them.

Legal sports betting has spread quickly since the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in 2018. Sports betting is now legal in 39 states plus Washington, D.C., and most of those states allow betting online as well as in person. Missouri was the most recent state to launch, on December 1, 2025. Offshore sportsbooks also take bets from US players, but they are not licensed by any US state regulator, and some states have ordered them to stop.

The pages below cover football betting, parlays and teasers, and auto racing. The rules of each bet are the same whether you place it at a casino window or on an app, so start with the bet type you use most.
