Top Dollar Slot Machine: Bonus, Versions and When to Take an Offer

How IGT's Top Dollar slot works: the qualifying bet, the four-offer take or try again bonus, the main versions, and how to decide when to take an offer.

Top Dollar is a classic IGT slot built around a simple choice: when the bonus hits, you get up to four credit offers and decide whether to keep each one or try again for the next. Most machines only enable the bonus at the qualifying bet, so check the glass before you play. Here is how the game works, the main versions, and how to think about each offer.

How Top Dollar Works

Top Dollar has been one of the slots players look for most in casinos across the United States for years. The original is a three-reel mechanical stepper with one payline and a 1,000-credit top award. It plays like any classic reel game until the Top Dollar symbol lands on the third reel of the payline, which starts the bonus.

The key rule is the qualifying bet. On most machines the bonus is only active when you bet the qualifying amount, which is often the maximum. Bet less and the Top Dollar symbol can land without starting anything. Much of the value of that last credit goes into the bonus, so if the bonus is not why you are playing, a plain diamond game such as Triple Double Diamond is the simpler choice.

The Top Dollar Bonus

The bonus gives you up to four offers, each shown in credits. After each of the first three, you either take the offer or try again for a new one. If you turn down the first three, you get whatever the fourth offer is, even if it is smaller.

The offers are random, but whether to keep one is your decision. That choice adds tension most slot machine games do not have, and it is a big reason Top Dollar became a fixture in Las Vegas and in casinos around the country.

Because offers are paid in credits, the cash value depends on the machine’s denomination. A 100-credit offer is worth $25 on a quarter machine and $500 on a $5 machine. Higher-denomination Top Dollar games usually sit in high limit rooms; our guide to the best high limit slot rooms in Las Vegas covers rooms such as Wynn Las Vegas.

Top Dollar Versions

  • Original Top Dollar: three reels, one payline and a 1,000-credit top award. The bonus starts with a Top Dollar symbol on the third reel.
  • Double Top Dollar: adds Double Diamond wilds that multiply wins. IGT released an online version in 2025 with a 3×3 grid, nine paylines, 2x and 4x multiplier wilds and a listed RTP of 96.24%. Its bonus starts with three Top Dollar symbols and also gives four offers.
  • Top Dollar Premium: a later stepper version that keeps the same take-or-try-again bonus with up to four offers.

When to Take a Top Dollar Offer

This is the question every Top Dollar player asks. IGT does not publish the average bonus value or how often each offer appears, so there is no exact cutoff anyone can prove. What you can do is think about what you give up each time you pass:

  • First offer: you still have three more draws, so a small offer is usually worth passing on.
  • Second offer: two draws remain. Take anything that clearly beats a typical offer on that machine.
  • Third offer: passing means you must accept the fourth offer, whatever it is. Only pass on a small offer.

The more offers you have left, the pickier you can be. Once you are down to the last draw, a decent offer in hand is usually worth more than the chance of a big one. Top Dollar FAQ

Who makes the Top Dollar slot?

IGT. In July 2025, funds managed by Apollo completed their purchase of IGT’s gaming and digital businesses and combined them with Everi. The combined company trades under the IGT name.

How many offers do you get in the Top Dollar bonus?

Up to four. You can turn down the first three, but you must accept the fourth.

Do you need to bet max on Top Dollar?

You need the qualifying bet, which is often the maximum. Without it the bonus is not enabled, so check the machine’s glass or help screen.

Can you play Top Dollar online?

IGT’s online Double Top Dollar uses the same four-offer bonus. Real-money online slots are only legal in a few US states, so whether you can play it depends on where you live.
