Distance from the Luxor to the MGM Grand – Can You Walk It?
By Steve Beauregard
At just over 1/2 mile away, the MGM Grand is an easy walk from the Luxor.
It’s exactly .54 miles from the front door of the Luxor (by the Sphinx), to the south entrance of the MGM Grand, (along Tropicana Avenue where the pedestrian bridge from the Tropicana Hotel and Casino meets the MGM Grand). It would take you just about ten minutes to walk it (sober).
This .54 mile distance mark is measured by walking the entire way, and not taking the free tram that goes from Mandalay Bay to the Excalibur Hotel and Casino, stopping at the Luxor in-between to pick up guests. More on that in a second.
So if you just want to walk the entire way, take the sidewalks out on Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Luxor and head north. There are always people on it, and traffic along the Strip, so I personally consider it a safe walk day or night.
When you get to the end of the Excalibur, you’ll see an elevator and escalator, and you’ll want to go up one of them, taking the pedestrian over to the Tropicana. On that side of the Strip, just stay follow the route that then takes you on the pedestrian walkway over to the MGM Grand.
The slightly longer route is to go over to the New York – New York Hotel and Casino and take the pedestrian bridge over the Las Vegas Strip to the Strip-front entrance of the MGM Grand. It’s exactly .1 of a mile longer this way, or .64 miles total from the front of the Luxor to MGM. It would take you about 15 minutes this way, as you would be meandering around the Excalibur for a bit before reaching the bridge that takes you over to the NY-NY.
Also please keep in mind that these distances are just to get you in the front door of the MGM Grand. This complex is so massive, that there’s still plenty of walking once you get inside. For example, the distance from the Strip entrance of the MGM Grand to the front desk on the opposite side of the hotel is .21 miles, or roughly 1/5th of a mile.
Tram from Luxor to MGM Grand
Those of you not fond of walking (or those of you wearing high heels to go to Hakkasan), can save time spent on your feet by taking the monorail from the Luxor to the Excalibur. This tram is free, and will deposit you off at a large white turret in front of the Excalibur.
From there, go over to the Tropicana Hotel and Casino on the pedestrian bridge. It’s exactly .17 miles from the tram stop to the front door of the MGM Grand (or less than a five minute walk). Going the other route, across to the NY-NY then to the MGM Grand is .24 miles from the tram station.
Bus (the Deuce) From the Luxor to the MGM Grand
As we mentioned earlier, it’s a ten minute walk to the MGM Grand from the Luxor. It’s only a five minute bus ride from the nearest Deuce Las Vegas bus stop to the MGM Grand. However it’s a five minute walk to the bus stop, which is across the Strip and south of the resort, near Mandalay Bay Road.
What this means is that it’s not really worthwhile to take the Deuce from the Luxor to the MGM Grand – especially factoring in the wait time for the bus. It’s much easier to simply take the tram to Excalibur, and then walk via the Tropicana Hotel overpass.
Taxi Fare from the Luxor to the MGM Grand
Even though the front entrance of the MGM Grand is just around a 1/2 mile or so from the Luxor, a cab ride between the two resorts would run you in the $7 to $8 range. That’s because of the initial $3.30 fee, and because they drop you off a little further down Tropicana Avenue at the valet entrance.
Driving from the Luxor to the MGM Grand
With the parking garages being so far away from the casinos at both resorts (but especially at MGM Grand, I would probably never drive this route. It’s much easier and faster to simply use the tram and then walk five minutes.
